First Peoples Wall Art

First Peoples is the name of this work. It has been designed by award-winning artist Paul Herzich and painted by a range of collaborators including Narrunga girl, Gumeracha local Isla Morris. An Acknowledgment of Country of both Peramangk and Kaurna peoples, Paul designed the piece in consultation with Elders. The sandblasted and painted work includes reference to local rivers and the Seven Sisters, and imagery of coolamons, shields and segdes.

The retaining wall at the city entrance of town is 170 metres long and sits below the hospital. In a lovely connection, South Australia’s first Aboriginal Matron – Nellie Lester – worked at the Gumeracha Hospital.
